The first evening of the Summer School we ran along Nan Lou Gu Xiang in the heavy rain to a restaurant with a metal roof…. and tried our chopstick skills. Here’s the carnage!

About Beijing

Temples

The Yonghe Lama Temple is a Tibetan Buddhist temple and one of the largest and most important Buddhist monasteries in the world. The architecturale style is a combination of Tibetan and Han Chinese style. Within the temple complex you can find the Hall of Harmony and Peace (Yonghegong), the Hall of Everlasting Protection (Yongyoudian) and the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses.

Confucius Temple was built to honour Confucius, one of China’s greatest philosophers, and educationalist. There is a courtyard of 198 stone tablets/steles carved with the names of approx 51,000 scholars who passed the imperial exam during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.

I decided to apply to the Beijing Summer School to give myself a challenge, and it was definitely hard work! Despite the heat and the culture shock, I’m glad I did it because I saw and experienced so much in the three weeks that I was there and met some lovely people, including our three assistants. I felt that we were well looked after but also given the freedom to explore Beijing in our own ways.
